Let’s talk about granny squares.
There’s an endless variety of patterns for these famous little crochet pieces, and so many of them make our hearts race with excitement. If you’re anything like me, you probably feel an instant urge to make them all. And sure, you can make them—but then comes the question: what are you going to do with them?
Blankets, clothing, bags in every shape and size, cushion covers… what else? We’re never short on ideas, even if we’re sometimes short on time to bring them all to life.
Well, I’m here to add a few more ideas to the list of what granny squares can be used for. But we’ll get to that in a minute!

First, let me share a little story. I leave the house and put on my sunglasses.
One of the first things I usually do when I go out is stop by a coffee shop for—yep—a coffee. So I walk in, take off my sunglasses, pop them into their case, and toss them into my bag. Then I head back out, pull them out again, put them on… and repeat the whole thing at the next stop. Maybe I go to the bank, swing by the yarn store to check for new arrivals, probably the supermarket and the bakery too.
By the time I get home, I’m not exactly worn out from running around—but I am a bit annoyed by how many times I’ve had to go through the sunglasses routine. Honestly, it gets on my nerves!
But then I had a brilliant idea—brighter than the early summer sun that’s making me wear the sunglasses in the first place!
Back to granny squares.
You know those cute little phone pouches with long straps that you wear across your body? A lot of them are made with granny squares.
So… why not use them for sunglasses too? That’s what I’m going to start doing!
Actually, I’m planning to make them match my outfits—and I might even expand my wardrobe just to have more excuses to make new pouches! (laughs)
There you go—one more fun and practical use for granny squares.
What do you think?
Naturally, I’ll be starting with my own designs. The first and second granny squares you’ll see in the photos below are already available in my Etsy shop. The third one is nearly ready to join them, and the fourth is patiently waiting its turn. One by one, they’re finding their place!
See you in the next stitch!
